New Years Cup finally played
18 Jul 2010
The way the weather was setting up in the early part of the week we were beginning to wonder if it was same again and a third potential cancellation for the New Years Cup. Fortunately although there were some early showers the day on the whole was pretty good, albeit windy. I guess it's no surprise for our better balls but the scoring was pretty good too!
Also no surprise that the calculators were out to separate all the prize winners. 46 turned out to be the winning score, returned by Paul Llewellyn and Anthony Montford and Steve Tripp and Tim Aggett. Both scored 22 out and 24 back; both scored 8 over the last three holes but Paul and Anthony had 17 over the last six to win the Trophy. Third was also a countback, and went to keith Kellaway and Dave Purnell, who scored 23 on the back nine, one more than Tony Clarke and mark Reed as both pairs scored 44. Not finished yet; a pair of 43s as well, and again a 1 point difference in the back nines, in this case to the advantage of John Oak and Mark Ayers over John Easton and Roger Ford.
Despite the strong winds 22 of the 88 competing pairs scored 40 points or more, which is a tribute to how well the course is playing. The recent rain has been welcome. The course is still hard, but not as fiery as in the past couple of weeks, and the greens receptive.
That was put to good use on Friday night as the Club got back into Plymouth League action after a lengthy lay-off as a couple of June matches were cancelled due to general fixture congestion. On Friday a tough home game with Bigbury was won by 3 1/2 games to 1 1/2, good advantage taken of home advantage. The next two weeks see away games at Tavistock and at Yelverton. A good result at either would be a huge boost to the campaign.
It has been a sad time for the Club of late, with a number of members passing away. Grahame Barber was taken suddenly and far too young. Long standing members Frank Easton and Danny Johns both passed away last weekend, as did Club Social member and former Mayor of Plymouth Betty Easton. Our thoughts go out thier nearest and dearest.
