CAPTAIN’S LOG no 6

Now that my head has cleared sufficiently I would like to put some thoughts about Captain’s Day to you.

As Tim has already said in his message, my Day on Sunday last was a success and, for me personally, pleasing to see so many members from the Club’s  different sections taking part. I thank you sincerely for your support. As I said at the Prize Presentation there were a lot of people who had worked behind the scenes and helped to make the day enjoyable for me. I did thank some on the night but I did miss a few so I make no apologies for thanking those concerned to a larger audience. If  I could start from the beginning of the day I thank Jon Bullen and his crew for preparing the course so well for us, especially with one member short. Interesting pin position on 11, so wicked!

Special mention to James Bailey, our Junior Captain, who worked from 6 til 9 raking over all the bunkers and then helped to get the BBQ out to the 8th Tee, sincere thanks James. To Tim and our Pro Nick for being around to set everything up in the shop and club-house with regards to what was happening on the course. My special thanks go to Pat Palmer and Caroline Clark, wives of two Committee members who readily offer to do the BBQ’s on special occasions and who turned out early and did a 6hr stint on the course cooking sausages and Burgers for players to enjoy with the drinks at the beer wagon. Thanks to St Austell Brewery for their support. Throughout the day  Lee, Wendy and the rest of the catering crew not only dealt with us golfers but also the usual busy Sunday lunch session, again from early a m. We do sometimes forget how lucky we are with our behind the scenes staff and the amount of work they do. Thanks to all you guys.

I seem to have developed a habit of making a hash of some things and I thank Tim for spreading the word about the Captain’s Putter and my unsuccessful juggling act. Especially embarrassing as the donor, Colin Jarrett our President, was there to witness it! They say things come in 3’s, so what’s next? After all the above I only have one more thank you to make. That is again to all those who played on the day, and apologies to those that couldn’t, your support and comments to me on the day where much appreciated.

I now turn to put on my other hat and that is with regard to the Charity Day which is being held on 31st July. As I write this there are a few spaces available to play on the day. We will be having our usual Grand Raffle and prize donations will be gratefully received on my behalf in the office. The draw sheets are on the Charity Day notice-board in the main lounge, so if you haven’t bought any entries yet please do so. You don’t have to be playing to enter this draw or the draw for a car park space for a year. We are also looking for hole sponsorship so if you want to publicise you or business for the week-end sheets for this are also on the board.

On the Golfing front the Palairet Team are contriving to turn my hair gray by winning by tight margins and I look forward to a win again in the Qtr Final, by any margin as long as we win. The support for the team from members in both matches played this year has been inspiring and far outnumbers our opposition, so more of the same on the 25th July at Exeter please. We could also lend our support to our Ladies team when they play matches away from home. Their success is as good for the club as the men so check out their dates and follow them as well. The Ladies Mail on Sunday team lost away to Cape Cornwall but were the only team to have registered an individual game win on this course.

Hopefully the weather will improve to allow us to play the much cancelled New Years Cup this week-end, 17th. I believe that next year we will play this competition on its due date unless the course is covered in snow or water. To wait 6 months to play a January competition is almost Monty Pythonesque!
