Fighting off the weather
05 Feb 2012
Well, the forecast was pretty much spot on, though I have to say I’m pleased we have been spared the snow. Since we are the bit of the country the weather forecasters stand in front of on TV, it may be worth knowing that according to our very local weather feed we get some more rain overnight and after Tuesday temperatures start to fall back towards freezing again, though nothing more of any significance falling out of the sky. Basically – watch yourselves on the roads this week.
And today’s course conditions? Also pretty much what we expected; 13 temporary greens and no electric trolleys. I’ve been asked a couple of times this week where to find information on current course conditions on the website. It’s always in the Quick Links, Course Updates pages, but to help along I’ve also put a note to that effect on the Home Page.
Don’t do what I see every day. I know it’s a basic human reaction to huddle together when it’s cold, but when you’re travelling along at 60mph+ in a metal box it isn’t a great idea. Observe your distances on the roads, and life will be safer.
Fran has asked me to let everyone know there are numbers available in the 100 Club. Very much first come, first served. It is £1 a week to enter, and the top weekly prize is £50, with other lower amounts as well. The proceeds from the weekly draws go to the Club’s funds.
Progress on the Changing Rooms is excellent, and we are into some fairly serious decoration work now. Our target remains bringing the new lockers in the week commencing 20th February. If you are one of those who failed to respond to the letter we sent to existing locker holders back in December, and have not indicated your wishes it is still not too late to do so. There is also a waiting list for lockers; please let me know if you want to go on it.
On the social front, thanks to all who have paid for next weekend’s Dinner. If you haven’t please could you do so. 12 places remain available for the Annual Dinner and Dance in March. Don’t forget its Quiz Night on Friday .
Today’s Medal has been cancelled, but I did put the March edition up on the board on Friday. The first 3 hours of the start sheet have already filled up. We have 3rd round Fullerton next Sunday, and please remember that goes ahead regardless of course and weather conditions, subject to 18 holes being open.
Nick is going to run a Pro’s Stableford next Saturday, 11th February. It will be a roll up, enter in the Shop on the day. Once the prizes have been credited to individual’s accounts Nick is planning to use some of the proceeds towards improving the practice facility, specifically additional turf to repair the damage.
An AGM note – Monday week, 13th February at 6pm is the deadline for nominations for the Committee. If you want to be a part of the management of the Club that’s how long you now have to obtain and complete a nomination form. To date I have received 5 completed forms and I am aware of a 6th – we have 8 vacancies each year.
We start our annual audit tomorrow, which will have our accountant’s team with us for something between 5 and 10 days.
We will be introducing an increase in bar prices with effect from tomorrow. Headline prices will rise to reflect increasing costs coming from our suppliers. The increase to members using their cards will clearly be reduced by the impact of the discount. I wish I could say that this will be it for the year, but we are anticipating having to undertake a further review post-budget in March; we expect the Chancellor to announce significant duty increases to be levied on alcohol (and petrol for that matter) and we would have to react to that. Let us all trust he is in a charitable mood, but with another anti-drinking health advertising campaign starting on TV tonight, I rather doubt it.Despite the loss of the Medal there is still plenty going on inside and outside ...read more
